Andrew’s statement about the painting Ansel Adams Wilderness:

An alpine lake is the absolute symbol of pristine wilderness. It is
the landscape painter’s noblest and most elaborate challenge. Last
summer I hiked in to Ediza Lake in California’s Sierra Nevada.
The trail passed giant boulders beneath granite walls through
towering fir and cedar. Shadow Creek brawled all along the steep
climb. Ediza’s beauty was breathtaking make more so by the toil.

Seeking and hard travel are keys to inspired landscape paintings.
Reckoning your way in unfamiliar back country makes for clarity
of vision and genuine discovery. Mine is a profession of exploring
the endless beauty of wilderness. I dreamed of this from childhood:
to live like my heroes Audubon and Bodmer.

is a large oil: "Notchtop at Daybreak"

Notchtop Mountain aswirl in clouds rears high above Lake Helene
in Rocky Mountain National Park. Ptarmigan Glacier glimmers
sunlit beyond. This area has drawn me many times over the past
twenty years to camp and paint. The lakes, peaks, and glaciers are
the most beautiful in the world. They are symbols of pure
wilderness and the ice age extant.

Andrew's painting Moose Willows was inspired during an autumn
painting trip in the Wind River Mountains. The rich reds and golds
of willow and aspen light the foreground where a bull moose browses.
The long format of the painting conveys the sense of enormity of that

Andrew's painting Awaiting Spring is an atmospheric narrative
of Angus and American Park cattle and out-crosses on round bales
of grass hay in late winter. The saturated colors in the damp
air warmly evoke a festive mosaic of gentle society. Some
stare with an interrogation aimed at the viewer while others feed
quietly. Andrew's livestock paintings over the years have primarily
considered Black Angus herds while this work takes an entirely
new direction.

Andy's featured work at this, his 9th year at Masters is a mountain
scene inspired this past year on his annual packtrip into the Wind
River Range with fellow Masters artist and friend Tucker Smith.
Saddle horses stand tied in the foreground before a giant cirque
backdrop in the crisp clear air at timberline. Carl Rungius packed
horses, hunted big game, and painted in this same country. Andy's
work and lifeway are informed by men like Carl as well as Audubon
and Bodmer who also worked directly from life in wilderness places.

livestock, trees, farms, roundbales rivers, and skies. Scenes neither
idealized nor embellished yet pulsing with rhythms of real atmosphere
and weather; Their trees and creatures moving and alive. They are paintings
of a country blessed with peace, happiness, and plenty.

Andrew created this painting from a location sketch done in the

Andrew has assembled twelve new paintings of landscapes found
in western Iowa and eastern Nebraska. They are scenes which
contemplate farms, ranches, forests, marshes and prairies. One is
a snow covered scene of cattle feeding on hay; the herd forming an
abstract dark mass leading to the bright geometry of ranch buildings.
Another painting is of mallards at rest on a frosted marsh in brilliant
autumn sunlight. There are roundbales, barns, fields, roads, wildlife
and other symbols arranged in these paintings infused with light
and movement. "This is the first solo exhibition of new work in 13
years in the community where I grew up. Now I am living back here
and painting the heartland with new eyes. What a great thrill it is to
explore these subjects anew."

This ethereal scene of a quiet secluded meadow with richly colored
round bales has several of Andy's trademark icons. The rooster
pheasant which he has hunted and painted throughout his life, and
the round bales which he has sought and painted in plein air for
decades across many states, as well as a summer forest in soft light.
He says, "This was really exciting both onsite and in the studio. It
has some very painterly passages."

Aspens fully sunlit are one of nature's most enchanting scenes; and
most difficult to paint. Most autumn aspens are painted backlit but in
this elegant narrative of an aspen grove, Andrew chose to portray
them as one large living organism, changing hues within, as
individual trees color up variously yet as part of the whole.

Cattle are moved up to high pastures on forest service permits or
private inholdings. This push is called the summer shove up in
parts of the West. You can get sore in the saddle for long hours
when you're not used to it but for scenery and fresh air it's nice
work if you can get it. Cattle, horse, aspen, and sage form a well
rounded set of symbols of the high American West.

Water lilies are best painted in the middle of the day when the
summer sun is high overhead. That is when their floating leaves
take the light directly and show their true colors. It is also when
the blooms open and seem to radiate light from the inside out.
Such a painting explores the the interplay of converging lily
accents set against the moving reflection of the trees and sky
beyond.

natural composition. This scene is from near the outflow and there
were elk, sheep, eagles and cutthroat trout. It is imperative when
working on such a powerful scene of an alpine lake at timberline
that several location studies be completed to ensure accuracy. This
is the greatest of all American landscape subjects and an important
record as glaciers diminish. When packing out of this country you
look down on the Green River from such a rocky height it's like a
view from an airplane."  -- Andrew Peters

This long running show has invited Andrew to submit a small painting
for the sixth straight year. The painting Bow River Chinook was done
in plein air in the Canadian Rockies during a warm spell or "Chinook."
Andrew's signature is scratched into the wet paint which certifies the
work was started and completed onsite in one go. Not retouching the
piece in the studio insures the veracity of the impression and the true
mood of the moment. Such highly worked field sketches are done in
support of larger studio versions and are seldom put on the market.
