Museum Show: Prix de West Invitational 2009
June 12 through September 15, 2009
National
Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
"Slide Lake" is another powerful alpine lake painted after a June 2008
packtrip into the wilderness. The horses were blocked by winter
blowdowns on the trail so Andy continued up to the lake on foot.
On a beautiful day he was confronted by this stupendous view of
Slide Lake backed by Lost Eagle Peak and the avalanche chute. He
was the first one in since ice out and didn't see another soul during
the time he painted the onsite plein air work and hiking back out. It
was a pristine experience and an inspiring scene.

"Shirley Lake and Battleship Mountain"
In August 2007 Andrew took a weeklong packtrip into the Wind
River Mountains of Wyoming to camp near this scene and paint
preliminaries in plein air."This lake has an absolutely perfect
natural composition. This scene is from near the outflow and there
were elk, sheep, eagles and cutthroat trout. It is imperative when
working on such a powerful scene of an alpine lake at timberline
that several location studies be completed to ensure accuracy. This
is the greatest of all American landscape subjects and an important
record as glaciers diminish. When packing out of this country you
look down on the Green River from such a rocky height it's like a
view from an airplane." -- Andrew Peters

This long running show has invited Andrew to submit a small painting
for the sixth straight year. The painting Bow River Chinook was done
in plein air in the Canadian Rockies during a warm spell or "Chinook."
Andrew's signature is scratched into the wet paint which certifies the
work was started and completed onsite in one go. Not retouching the
piece in the studio insures the veracity of the impression and the true
mood of the moment. Such highly worked field sketches are done in
support of larger studio versions and are seldom put on the market.
