Andrew created this painting from a location sketch done in the
Wind River Mountains in Wyoming. The aspen trunks seem opalescent
and animated among the glittering leaves. "I never tire of being among them;
they are irrepressibly cheerful even on overcast days. And they are always
near good fly fishing and grouse hunting."

Andrew has assembled twelve new paintings of landscapes found
in western Iowa and eastern Nebraska. They are scenes which
contemplate farms, ranches, forests, marshes and prairies. One is
a snow covered scene of cattle feeding on hay; the herd forming an
abstract dark mass leading to the bright geometry of ranch buildings.
Another painting is of mallards at rest on a frosted marsh in brilliant
autumn sunlight. There are roundbales, barns, fields, roads, wildlife
and other symbols arranged in these paintings infused with light
and movement. "This is the first solo exhibition of new work in 13
years in the community where I grew up. Now I am living back here
and painting the heartland with new eyes. What a great thrill it is to
explore these subjects anew."

This ethereal scene of a quiet secluded meadow with richly colored
round bales has several of Andy's trademark icons. The rooster
pheasant which he has hunted and painted throughout his life, and
the round bales which he has sought and painted in plein air for
decades across many states, as well as a summer forest in soft light.
He says, "This was really exciting both onsite and in the studio. It
has some very painterly passages."

Andrew's catalog piece entitled "Little Harbinger" shows a stream
in spate during spring thaw. It emerges from behind the delicate
tracery of willow branches which support a belted kingfisher,
quietly perched. The kingfisher is a harbinger of spring and a
cheerful and magnificent songbird.

Aspens fully sunlit are one of nature's most enchanting scenes; and
most difficult to paint. Most autumn aspens are painted backlit but in
this elegant narrative of an aspen grove, Andrew chose to portray
them as one large living organism, changing hues within, as
individual trees color up variously yet as part of the whole.

private inholdings. This push is called the summer shove up in 
parts of the West. You can get sore in the saddle for long hours
when you're not used to it but for scenery and fresh air it's nice
work if you can get it. Cattle, horse, aspen, and sage form a well
rounded set of symbols of the high American West.

Andrew's painting "Athabaskan Princess" shows the splendor of
Lake O'Hara in the Canadian Rockies. Andrew lived in Canmore
Alberta one summer painting in plein air along these shores

This is Andrew's second year in this major live auction of western
American art. His painting "Summer's Divine Light" is a powerfully
lighted statement of forest, pond and lilies. 

Water lilies are best painted in the middle of the day when the
summer sun is high overhead. That is when their floating leaves
take the light directly and show their true colors. It is also when
the blooms open and seem to radiate light from the inside out.
Such a painting explores the the interplay of converging lily
accents set against the moving reflection of the trees and sky
beyond.

"Shirley Lake and Battleship Mountain"

In August 2007 Andrew took a weeklong packtrip into the Wind
River Mountains of Wyoming to camp near this scene and paint
preliminaries in plein air."This lake has an absolutely perfect
natural composition. This scene is from near the outflow and there
were elk, sheep, eagles and cutthroat trout. It is imperative when
working on such a powerful scene of an alpine lake at timberline
that several location studies be completed to ensure accuracy. This
is the greatest of all American landscape subjects and an important
record as glaciers diminish. When packing out of this country you
look down on the Green River from such a rocky height it's like a

one of the five most prestigious museum shows in the nation
and Andrew is honored to be a part of it.

Andrew has been chosen to deliver a keynote address entitled
"Karl Bodmer's Voyage and Legacy" detailing the profound
influence of this artist on Andrew's work, travel, and life". This
exciting and vividly illustrated lecture will be held in the Wells
Fargo Theater adjacent the exhibition.

Andrew has created a powerful winter scene of aspens at sunset in
the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming. Once he saw Ruffed Grouse
in this same place during a snowstorm and returned here many
times. It is a favorite place of many in Wyoming. The live auction is

This long running show has invited Andrew to submit a small painting
for the sixth straight year. The painting Bow River Chinook was done
in plein air in the Canadian Rockies during a warm spell or "Chinook."
Andrew's signature is scratched into the wet paint which certifies the
work was started and completed onsite in one go. Not retouching the
piece in the studio insures the veracity of the impression and the true
mood of the moment. Such highly worked field sketches are done in
support of larger studio versions and are seldom put on the market.

The National Museum of Wildlife Art is the most prestigious
of its type in the U.S. This show is including Andrew's work
for the seventh year. Andrew's "Peregrine Point Study" is
a plein-air piece done on location on the Big Sur Coast on a
springtime afternoon. He titled it for a chase he witnessed
during the painting process where a Red-tailed Hawk chased
a Peregrine Falcon in a steep dive over the surf. Such
experiences are Andy's greatest pleasure while at work in
the outdoors.
